Hydraulic Institute and Pump Systems Matter announced the kick-off of their first webinar series for 2012. The Variable Speed Drives four-part webinar series will begin on January 13, 2012.

Variable speed drives in pump systems are now a mature technology that, in correct applications, can generate large benefits to the user in cost savings and reliability improvements.

Nine water pumps save Sibu from major flooding

From Borneo Post Online: Nine water pumps at two pumping stations greatly reduced flooding in low-lying areas here during the recent period of heavy rain. Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh pointed out the success of the pumping stations located in front of Kingwood Hotel and Central Market.

“In fact, there was hardly any flood water in the traditionally flood-prone areas from Kapor Road to Tiong Hua Road and to Ang Chiu Koh. This is a good sign and with the Phase II Sibu Flood Mitigation plan about to start, the people of Sibu should no longer fear floods any more,” he told reporters when visiting the Kingwood pumping station yesterday.

Extra pumps headed to stricken Russian boat

From Yahoo! 7 News: More water pumps will be rushed to the crew of a stricken Russian fishing boat stranded in Antarctica as they battle to stay afloat while waiting for rescue ships to arrive, officials said Tuesday. The nearest vessels are still several days away and are being hampered from reaching the Russian-flagged Sparta because of thick ice in the frozen Southern Ocean.

The crew have attached mooring lines to the ice to give the ship greater stability and are managing to pump out water at the speed it is coming in, but New Zealand rescue officials said they need more pumps and fuel.

Palm Coast weighs options to power water plant pumps

From the Daytona Beach News Journal: Palm Coast plans to install its own electrical lines and poles to power a dozen new water wells after discussions between Florida Power and Light and a landowner short-circuited over liability issues.

The City Council must still approve a $136,337 contract for the electrical work, including design, at a future meeting. The electrical work is part of a project to supply more water to the city's Water Treatment Plant No. 3, which has a capacity for 3 million gallons per day. But the plant only has enough wells right now to produce 1.5 million gallons per day.

Bangkok governor smiles after receiving pumps from the Thai government

From The Nation: Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said Sunday that he felt relieved and could smile now that the government has provided more water pumps to the city administration.

Sukhumbhand said 24 more pumps have been installed for draining water at the lower Khlong Hokwa Canal. Moreover, the Flood Relief Operations Centre will give more pumps to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration for draining water at the end of the drainage tunnel in Phrakhanong, Sukhumbhand said.

He thanked Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and FROC chief Justice Minister Pracha Promnok for providing the pumps to the BMA for draining the floodwaters faster.

Earlier the BBC News reported that floodwater is continuing to move through the Thai capital, after months of heavy monsoon rain.

Measuring only 2.4 inches long, 1.6 inches wide and 1.3 inches deep, the Pulse easily fits near the bearing on a pump to gauge temperature and vibration. At-a-glance LEDs on the unit indicate pump performance and provide preventive maintenance alerts when needed.

"Colfax's SmartSense Pulse is designed to enable a level of monitoring that would otherwise require more staff and diagnostic equipment, which would be expensive and impractical," said Dan Yin, Ph.D., an electronics engineer with Colfax.
