Irrigation pumps can be switched off by mobile phone

From Farmers Weekly: Spalding company Trailer Vision, which specialises in wireless camera systems and trackers, has developed a new TVC remote irrigation pump controller with local farming company G&D Matthews.

The TVC controller uses GSM mobile technology to remotely control irrigation pumps. A simple three-wire installation connects the controller to the pump's water flow-switch, so it can be fitted to almost any pump.

Inventor of irrigation pumps for African farmers wins a $100,000 award

AP reported earlier today that Martin Fisher, the inventor of manual irrigation pumps used by poor farmers in Africa, has won the $100,000 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability. Fischer is the co-founder and CEO of the nonprofit KickStart, which develops and markets tools such as the pumps that can help small-scale rural farmers.

Kudos to Martin Fisher! According to the report, nearly 62,000 people in Kenya, Tanzania and Mali are running profitable businesses by using KickStart’s MoneyMaker pumps.
